Free MMORPGs

Many gamers love MMORPGs. The major drawbacks of those kind of games are both the time you have to put into them and the fact that most of them cost a monthly fee. But there are a lot of games that are free to play. Aside from the well-known Guild Wars there are some lesser-known games that are free to play. In my quest to find the ultimate free MMORPG (I haven’t found it yet ;) ) I tried out several (mostly Korean) MMORPGs.

Rakion

Although it’s #1 on my list it’s not even a MMORPG at all. It more or less an online action game with RPG elements. Instead of playing in a persistent world the players can create their own instances of certain stages in which they have to work as a group to kill the evil monsters. The graphics of the game are impressive (especially for a free game). The combat is more action-oriented than in normal games of that type. But it’s fun to play. You can get more information about this game at the official site.

Silkroad Online

Silkroad Online is a true MMORPG unlike Rakion. It’s set into the 8th century and the game world spans from China in the east to Byzantinum in the west. Graphics and sounds are very good unlike in any other free2play game so far and the gameplay seems to be pretty solid. Currently the servers are overburdened most of the time, but I hope it will get better with time. At the present time you can only create chinese characters (I am not sure if you will choose other starting regions like India or Byzantinum later). The world presents itself as a mixture between fantasy based on the mythology and beliefs of the regions you are in and history. I think I’ll keep an eye on this game. It has great potential IMO. Check out the official site for more information.

I will cover more free2play MMORPGs in the future. Stay tuned!
