Finally Bob Thomas (aka Sirian) has posted his Maps Guide at Apolyton.net. The article gives you detailed information about the different map types and is accompanied by some nice screenshots. If you are already playing Civ IV 24/7 you really should check this out, and if not you really really should check this out.

Civilization IV brings you an unprecedented selection of map options. However, everything good also comes at a cost. In this case, the cost is that there are so many options, you almost need a guide to help you find the map situations that appeal to you, especially for multiplayer.
